Steve Edwards goes to the West of Ireland for Marathon no.465 (and his wife runs too)

On Sunday 22nd March 2009 Steve Edwards travelled to Galway to take part in the Connemara International Marathon which is a day of racing around a very scenic part of the West of Ireland. The day comprises of a Half Marathon, a Full Marathon and a 39.3 mile Ultra Marathon.

Here is Steve's race report:- "This was my first Connemara marathon and in fact my first visit to Galway.

The marathon route follows a very scenic but undulating course around the Connemara National Park taking in some lovely views of the rugged Galway coast area. There are significant climbs of about half a mile at halfway and a longer drawn out climb of over a mile at the 23 mile point which they call 'The Hell Of The West'. I finished in a time of 3:11:36 having passed through halfway in just over 1:35. This gave me 24th position overall and 4th V40 which I was really pleased with given the nature of the course. Even more pleasing was being at the finish to see my wife Teresa crossing the line running in only her 3rd half marathon, (but 1st international race) and by far the hardest course she's done so far in a time of 2:11. (Very well done Teresa)

Overall, this is a fantastic event with a half, full and ultra (39m), so something for everybody. It's well organised, you have beautiful scenery, great support and they even got the weather right, nice and sunny"

The key to the event's success has been its ability to offer a unique package of experience. The popular sport of long-distance running is transformed for runners and walkers in the dramatic setting of mountains, glacier lakes and the rugged green-brown landscape which winds in and around the challenging mountain wilderness of Galway. The course meanders past bogs, hills, lakes and the Twelve Pin mountains rising up over the great expanse of Killary Lough, through the quiet village of Leenane, around the Maam Turk Mountains and all the way back up to Maam Cross.
