The First Ever Cotswold Garden Charm Offensive Treasure Trail has started

The first ever garden treasure hunt of its kind has been launched in the grounds of Painswick Rococo Garden, by Cotswolds and Forest of Dean Tourism

The treasure trail is set to capture the imagination of the public and set thousands off on a journey of discovery; a journey which will end with one lucky (and clever) person, winning a specially commissioned unique silver charm bracelet worth hundreds of pounds.

Set in the Cotswolds, clues needed to close in on the treasure, have been laid in four of the regions finest gardens, Painswick Rococo Garden, Abbey House Gardens, Batsford Arboretum and Mill Dene Garden.

Anyone can take part in the hunt (which runs from now until September 30th 2009) simply by visiting the gardens and solving the clues.
“This is a great way to increase visitors to some of our finest British gardens and to perhaps encourage people to look in more detail at what these remarkable gardens contain”, said BBC garden writer and broadcaster Tony Russell.

The four gardens involved were delighted to participate in this new, exciting and fun way to promote the Cotswolds and to get more visitors into their gardens and into the area.

Painswick Rococo Garden, Painswick, Gloucestershire GL6 6TH

Charm – Silver snowdrop

“The Rococo Garden is delighted to be participating in this Treasure Trail with three other such diverse and interesting Gardens in the Cotswolds. We love puzzles here at Painswick which is why we created our Anniversary Maze. Many of the features in our 18th century garden were created with tongue firmly in cheek. This Treasure Trail is frivolous fun and would have been strongly approved of by the creators of our Pleasure Ground”.

The Gardens are open daily until 31st October 2009  11.00am to 5.00pm

Abbey House Gardens,Malmesbury, Wiltshire, SN16 9AS

Charm – ‘Adam and Eve’

“Well Adam & Eve living in the Garden of Eden is an image we can happily live with given our location right beside Malmesbury Abbey and our nickname 'The Naked Gardeners’!

Hunting for clues is reminiscent of the hunting we continue to do to find the right plants to thrive in each area of the gardens so what could be better than to share the hunting idea with our visitors whether they are alone or with friends or family.  It's both a challenge and fun but above all very rewarding as participants in this wonderful charm offensive will discover as they look closely around the gardens.

Our garden began its development for the benefit of our children in the mid 1990's when it was a haven for their imagination not to mention their well-being.  The grounds have the most special atmosphere and an 'other worldliness' hard to describe.  Finding the fairy door bought by our daughter to put in the garden is an echo of those early days when creating our own little piece of heaven was budding in Ian's mind."

The Gardens are open daily until October 21st 2009  11.00am to 5.30pm

Batsford Arboretum, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire GL56 9QB

Charm – Buddha

“The Batsford Buddha charm is a beautiful copy of the heroic size original, which is found snuggled away deep in our woods. At Batsford we have fifty six magical acres in which to search for clues, amongst streams, grottoes and a cave.  Good luck!”

The Arboretum is open daily until Mid-November 2009  10.00am to 5.00pm

Mill Dene Garden, Blockley, Moreton-in-Marsh, Glos. GL56 9HU

Charm – Watermill wheel

“Mill Dene's charm is a mill wheel.  A water mill has been on this site since before Domesday (1085). An old stone building still commands views of the mill pond and the lovely garden that surrounds it.

I am in love with the idea of a charm bracelet and a hunt for clues. This garden really majors on fun and this will definitely be FUN!  I really want more people to come to my garden and appreciate the charm that it offers”.

The Garden is open Wednesday to Friday 10.30 am to 5.00pm, Saturday mornings 9.30am to 12.30pm and Bank holidays 2.00pm to 5.30pm until the end of September
