Steve Edwards goes to Ireland to run his first marathon under his new world record targets

On Sunday 30th August 2009 Steve Edwards continued his world record challenge by going to Ireland to compete in the Longford Marathon.
Longford is situated in the Irish Midlands and County Longford lies in the Shannon Basin and the upper catchment area of the River Erne.

Steve was wearing race number 271 and here is his race report:-

"This was my first time running the Longford Marathon and I had heard that it was mainly a flat course so set out at just under 7min/mile pace with the intention of perhaps finishing around the 3 hour mark.
I reached halfway in 1:30:10, so far so good and therefore continued at the the same pace. Having got to mile 20 in exactly 2:17, a sub 3 was still not out of the question, but with a slight incline along a busy main road for the next 2 miles, I lost vital seconds which although I tried to make up, by mile 25 I was left with exactly 8 minutes to run the last 1.2 miles.

In the end it was very close, despite running the last mile in 6min 35sec, it wasn't enough and I narrowly missed out by 11 seconds crossing the line in 3:00:11. At first I was quite disappointed, but having reflected back, it was in fact my 3rd sub 3:05 in 5 weeks, so perhaps being a little hard on myself. In terms of positions, I finished 2nd in the V45 category, 3rd in all vet categories and 17th overall in the main field.

For the record, Longford was marathon number 482 but more importantly my 419th sub 3:30, so to achieve the revised goal means running on average a sub 3:30 marathon every 12-13 days from now until May 2012. I have another 10 marathons scheduled this year so while there's little margin for error and no room whatsoever for serious injury, I'm just going to take it one by one and hope I can just keep going"
