Commemorating the Fallen

Saturday December 12, 2009, The Chapel, Francis Close Hall, Swindon Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL52 3JG

Remembering those who gave the greatest sacrifice is at the heart of an appeal by the Old Boys of St Paul’s Practising School.
When Old Boy Ron Prewer discovered the faded and worn memorial board commemorating 168 fallen students from the school including his own grandfather, he and his old classmates sprung into action to restore it to its former glory.
And on Saturday December 12 a special memorial and re-dedication service at the chapel will help to raise funds to complete the work, and also install a special plaque for those who lost their lives in the First World War.
The board was discovered in poor condition at the back of Francis Close Hall chapel, and Mr Prewer is hoping the event will help him reach the target of £2,500 for its restoration.
The school was part of St Paul’s College from 1847 to 1951, and is now part of the University of Gloucestershire’s Francis Close Hall campus in Cheltenham.
The service will be led by the University’s Chancellor, Lord Carey of Clifton, who will be joined by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patricia Broadfoot, and University Chaplain Rev Tamsin Merchant.
“Everyone is welcome to attend,” said Ron Prewer, “it would be wonderful to see the board restored and be able to read the names of the 168 men from the school who served and died.”
Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free, however booking is essential as we have a limited number of seats.  To reserve places or to find out more about the appeal,  please contact Cheryl Higgs on 01242 714829 or email chapelcentenary@glos.ac.uk.
