Former Chief Constable of Gloucestershire launches policing history

Dr Tim Brain, former Chief Constable of Gloucestershire and Visiting Professor at the University of Gloucestershire will be sharing insights into the unexplored history of policing at the launch of his new book on Thursday 25 March at the University.
Dr Brain, who has a PhD in history as well as a honorary doctorate from the University of Gloucestershire, has written A History of Policing in England and Wales from 1974: A Turbulent Journey which has just been published by Oxford University Press.
The special reception and readings will take place at the Centre for Active Learning at the University’s Francis Close Hall campus, Cheltenham.
Dr Brain started writing the book in his spare time whilst he was still in the top job at the Gloucestershire Constabulary.
“I used holidays, Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings to work on the book,” said Dr Brian, who admits that he had to put it to one side for eight weeks during the floods that devastated the county in the summer of 2007.
“The book is a much a history of our times as a history of policing.  It’s inevitably written from a police officer’s perspective but it is not a police polemic, there’s not a conscious bias,” said Dr Brain who explores of themes of order and social stability, community relations and the reforms of the Thatcher, Major and Blair administrations in his book.
The book describes the landmark events of the last 26 years including the miners’ strikes, urban unrest of the 1980s and the Hillsborough disaster, along with major crime investigations such as the hunt to track down the Yorkshire Ripper and the Fred West and Soham murder cases.
Dr Brain will be sharing his considerable experience with students on the criminology programmes at the University as a Visiting Professor.
“I am deeply honoured by what the University has offered me with a Honorary Doctor of Laws and a visiting professorship.  I am really pleased to be able to cement my relationship with the University by hosting the launch on campus.”
The event will be attended by local dignitaries and representatives from the police and academic communities.
