Multi-prize-winning young artist to hold solo show in leading gallery

One of the UK's brightest young artists is holding his first solo exhibition this
June at the Fosse Gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold.
Michael de Bono is a self-taught painter living in Wales. Still only in his 20s
and notoriously publicity shy, he has nevertheless already exhibited with
several prominent national institutions including the Royal Society of Portrait
Painters, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal British Artists, the Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy of Art. Michael de Bono - Free AssociationMichael de Bono - Free Association

In 2009 he was awarded two prizes by the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers, making him the first artist to receive a dual prize in the history of the award.
Michael's work is characterised by an emphasis on light effects and a
reverence for the naturalism of the Italian High Renaissance and the
Caravaggisti - an attitude that made him decide against a formal art education.
"I thought about going to university and began to scout around the ones that had good reputations inside Britain," he recalls. "Things were in a bad way everywhere, technical knowledge was obsolete, comprehension of art history was scant, and the Old Masters had few champions."
He was unable to find a university where he felt his love of the old masters
would be nurtured.
"The prevailing misconception in painting is that the last half century was
progressive," he says. "The gradual erosion of skill and rigor of thought
inevitably led to less and less substance, until blank canvases were displayed
as art. How can we go from Leonardo or Titian to a blank canvas and be
expected to believe that this is the evidence of progress?"
Instead of pursuing a university education, he set about educating himself.
"I've always been interested in the paintings of Caravaggio and Hans
Memling, these two are of central importance. The National Gallery in London
is a great resource, I can walk around learning from the paintings I see. Go to the Old Masters and to Nature, that is what Joshua Reynolds advised in his
discourses and that's good solid no nonsense advice, which I'd advocate to
any aspiring painter."
The paintings for his latest show have a richness and intensity that reflects
not only his love of some of history's finest painters but also his love for his
model.
"I love to paint and I paint the woman that I love," he says. "I'd like to
communicate an optimistic message, one rooted in a life in which a spirit of
peace predominates."
The exhibition in June will be a step in the right direction, as it will allow him
to reach a wider audience than ever before.
"I'm looking forward to having my solo exhibition hosted by Fosse Gallery,"
he says. "It has many vibrant and eclectic shows and always projects a
complementary attitude of its painters to interested parties."

The exhibition will be at Fosse Gallery Fine Art, The Manor House,            The Square, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire                                   from Sunday June 10 until Sunday June 30
