The Simple life:a craft community in the Cotswolds exhibition at Court Barn Museum

The exhibition runs from Wednesday 31 October- Sunday 25 November 2012

In the summer of 1902 there was an exodus of East London craftsmen to Chipping Campden. The men were escaping the industrialised world to be a part of a simple rural idyll.

Charles Robert Ashbee had set up the Guild of Handicraft in the East End of London in 1888 with the primary ideal of creating worthwhile work; the products came second. It was the most radical workshop of its time, seeking to provide a balanced and fulfilling life in an ever-changing, industrialised world. The Guild consisted of men of different ages, background and skills; silversmithing, cabinet-making, printing and metalworking.

It was part of Ashbee's romanticism to think that craft would be at home in the country. But was he right? Were his craftsmen really going home? Most of them were Londoners; some had never visited the countryside.

This autumn Court Barn Museum will be putting on a display about the Guildsmen and their families who moved to Chipping Campden.

What life was like for them in the country, how locals reacted to the invasion, and what fortune awaited them after the Guild disbanded in 1908.

This groundbreaking museum, situated in the Cotswold town of Chipping Campden, tells the story of how a small town, in a beautiful setting, became a gathering place for creative people at the start of the 20th Century and continues to attract designers and makers today. Highlights include work by C.R. Ashbee, F.L Griggs and Katharine Adams.
