Jessie May's Head of Fundraising joins the Sodbury Sportive

In recent months staff at Jessie May's Kingswood based office have been seeing a lot less of their Head of Fundraising, Julian Withers. The reason for this is that he has lost 3 stone in the last year having taken up cycling.

Julian explains " Everyone told me that I would find losing weight much easier before I turned 40, so I decided to eat less and start getting more exercise - aged 39 ¼ .The great thing about working in Kingswood is that, whichever way I go to work, I have to cycle up a long hill. I'm sure this has helped me lose weight and become much fitter. I've started taking a longer route so that I can be sure of getting in a good 10 miles in each direction at the start and the end of my working day."
Julian decided to put his new regime to good use and is going to take part in the Sodbury Sportive on the 18th August and the London to Paris Cycle Ride in September.
Jessie May and the organisers of the Sodbury Sportive, Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, joined forces earlier this year to raise as much as possible for the charity that provides specialist Nursing care for terminally ill children in the family home.
"Starting with the Sodbury Sportive seemed like a logical thing to do in the run up to the London to Paris Cycle Ride. I've never cycled in a sportive before and I'm quite nervous at the prospect of this. I have opted for the full 100 mile course which will take me from Chipping Sodbury out into the Cotswolds - I'm sure it will be a fantastic event. The big question for me as a new cyclist is "can I repeat this day after day in September when I cycle to Paris? With both these events I am looking to raise as much as I can for Jessie May - having seen the work of our Nurses at first hand I know every penny I raise will be put to the very best use."
Sodbury Sportive Organiser Bill Bennett said " This is the second Sodbury Sportive. Having tried it for the first time last year we had over 350 cyclists. This year we are hoping for over 750 so it will be a fantastic event for all riders of all abilities - you can choose from a 30, 60 or 100 mile ride. We are delighted to be working with Jessie May with this event and we know how vital the work of the Jessie May Nurse is.
Community and Events Fundraiser Emily Lynch said " We want there to be as many Jessie May riders as possible taking part in the Sodbury Sportive. Anyone wanting to take part should contact me on 0117 9582174 or at Emily.lynch@jessiemay.org.uk.
