Badger Cull trial in Gloucestershire ends

It has been announced that the pilot badger cull in Gloucestershire is to be ended. The three Members of Parliament whose constituents are most affected by the cull made the following statement:
"TB is a nasty disease which causes suffering and death to badgers and great financial loss to the country and the farmers that own the cattle. There is also an extreme emotional loss when cattle are compulsorily slaughtered due to contracting TB. Therefore it was important that every possible action was taken to try and prevent the spread of TB and hopefully eradicate it.

The two culls in North Somerset and West Gloucestershire announced by the Government were trial culls to determine the effectiveness, safety and humaneness of a cull and a substantial number of badgers were culled.

It is now important that the results of both of these culls are independently and expertly analysed before determining the next steps. Research must be done to see what differences there were between the two pilot culls. Everyone will have the chance to express their views on what should happen next, however it is crucial to allow the independent analysis to take place before any decisions are taken regarding future action."
