Marathon 449 comes and goes - Cotswold's Steve Edwards completes another race

Steve Edwards from Moreton-in-Marsh ran his 449 marathon last Sunday 9th March in a time of 3 hours 13 minutes and 26 seconds and that is another fine time and another race under his belt towards his world record challenge of running 500 marathons by 2012 in an average time of under 3 hours 20 minutes.

Steve EdwardsMarathon Number 449 was the 32nd Duchy Marathon at Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth, Cornwall, organised by the Cornwall Athletic Club and raced on Sunday 9th March 2008. Steve, running for the 100 Marathon Club , completed the race in 3 hours, 13 minutes 26 seconds, which was more than 11 minutes quicker than last year. This improved time saw him finish 17th overall out of a field of 154 starters and 3rd in the Male Veterans 45-49 category.

The 2 lap course is undulating and has strong headwinds along the coast road for 3 miles on each of the laps.

Steve said "I have just come back from a 460 mile round trip to Redruth. I managed to run fairly even halfway splits which I'm always pleased about, but even more pleasing was running the last 6.2 miles in 45 minutes flat. Always a good measure of marathon fitness to see how long it takes after the 20 mile point!

So, although I had a couple of niggles leading up to this race, a sore ball of toe on my right foot and an ache in my left knee, it seems as though the regular icing with a bag of frozen peas has done the trick again. This was not only my 3rd sub 3 hours 15 minute race of the year, but another one well under the target finish time of 3 hours 20 minutes. Fingers crossed that I can stay injury free and keep this going. Not only for my ongoing 500 challenge, but also as I continue my preparation for this year's Brathay 10 marathons in 10 days challenge in May, where I will be attempting to break the record for completing it in the fastest cumulative time"

Steve is also running in this event to raise funds for the Brathay Hall Trust and his Fundraising target is £2000. His personal fund raising page is

Well done again Steve, amazing stamina and resolve. All contributions to his fundraising would be appreciated.

Steve now has a rest of only two weeks before he travels to the other end of the country for the Dumfries Marathon in Scotland on Sunday 23rd March. We shall be reporting on this race and wish Steve all the best again.
