A Place in my Country - In Search of a Rural Dream - by Ian Walthew

Thursday 1st May 2008 Cotswold Author Ian Walthew's highly acclaimed first book is being re-issued in paperback.
A Place in My Country is part memoir, dealing with issues of personal identity, sense of place, loss and memory, but equally it is about a small Cotswold village in the early 21st Century.

"Funny, touching and ultimately very moving..a beautiful, unsentimental account of a personal loss that is reflected in the rapidly changing texture of life in rural England" Sunday Telegraph

A Place in my Country- In Search of a Rural Dream was Ian's first work of non-fiction and was published by Weidenfield & Nicholson in hardback in July 2007. It has since been reprinted.

The author, whilst having no pretensions to being either a journalist or an academic, did want to tackle some of the many issues facing country people, of all backgrounds, but in particular those facing rural workers. House prices, the problems and benefits associated with "weekend homes", the threats to the affordable and "drinking" based pub, are just some of the issues that the book explores.

Equally, the book tries to compare two types of farming - the large scale profitable modern farming carried out by larger farmers and estates, and the smaller more traditional, mixed farms that once were much more common in the Cotswolds. Neither are easy.

"Compelling and often deeply moving... a page turner" Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
"Required reading for anyone who claims to know or love this country" Financial Times
"A tale of moving to the country that even those who actually live and work there might enjoy" Shooting Times

Ian Walthew left school aged eighteen and spent six months walking across Spain, living as a tramp and following in the footsteps of the Cotswold writer Laurie Lee. Ian eventually fell into the newspaper industry and ended his media career as worldwide Marketing Director on the executive board of the Paris-based newspaper The International Herald Tribune. After nearly a decade living and working abroad in Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris and travelling the world he was thirty four when he unexpectedly resigned and moved with his Australian wife to the Cotswolds.
