Steve Edwards is back and running - Marathon number 454 is completed

Remember that Cotswolds based Steve Edwards is going for a world record by completing 500 marathons at an average race time of under 3 hours 20 minutes. He aims to complete the 500 marathons in Year 2012 to coincide with both the Olympics in the UK and his own 50th birthday. He has just completed Marathon Number 454 after a well deserved rest following on from his world record breaking time for a 10 marathons in 10 days challenge set in May this year.Marathon number 454Marathon number 454 was the SalClear Isle of Man Marathon organised by the Isle of Man Veteran Athletics Club on Sunday 10th August 2008 and run over the Manx Northern Course starting and finishing in Ramsey. The start was from Mooragh Promenade and the finish was inside the Ballacloan Stadium.

The Marathon was slighly less than two circuits of 13.25 miles (to give the required marathon distance). The first five miles of the circuit are undulating, the highest point of 259 feet being reached at approx. 4 miles and 17 miles. The remainder of the course is mainly flat.

Steve commented on the build up to the race and result:-

"Since breaking the record for the fastest 10 in 10, I've found motivation a little difficult over the last few weeks. Coupled with the fact I've had a bit of a hamstring niggle, training hasn't gone as well as I would have liked. So this marathon was going to be a good test for me and I'm pleased to say it went better than expected. Making my marathon debut in a Bourton RR (Bourton Roadrunners) vest and running in a special race number of 454, I finished in 7th place out of 98 finishers with a time of 3:11:17, more importantly I picked up the 1st Vet 45  trophy to go with the 1st Vet 40 I got here last year."

"Analysing the race afterwards, I'm a minute and half slower than last year, however the weather conditions were certainly not as good with strong head winds to contend with for 4 miles on each of the 2 laps. I went through halfway in 1:35:40 and continued this pace through to the finish with even splits. My last 10Km was under 45 minutes and I felt strong enough to push hard in the latter stages to chase down and pass 3 other runners in the final mile, 2 of whom were in my V45 category!. So overall, I was happy with my performance, it's another sub 3:15 and another marathon towards the target."

Another piece of good news is that I'm now being supported by Team Mannatech, a health & wellness company that specialise in nutritional products. This is especially relevant for me as the products they specialise in are not only of the finest quality, but also 100% natural and they will certainly help me not only with performance during training and competition, but also during recovery periods which is just as important."
