A Cabinet Decision - Sold for £65,000

Simon Chorley Art & Antiques kicked off their Autumn season with a fantastic price achieved at last week’s blockbuster  auction (Thursday 18 September 2008) when a local Gloucestershire family sold a  Louis XIV ebony, ivory and tortoiseshell cabinet, c 1650, for an astonishing £65,000 against an estimate of £20,000-£25,000.

Louis XIV cabinetThe cabinet was in need of a considerable amount of restoration as it had been kept in damp conditions for many years. The piece was originally acquired by the family in payment of a bad debt from a French client.

Thomas Jenner-Fust of Simon Chorley Art & Antiques did a tremendous amount of research into the piece finding out that the cabinet doors are carved with two scenes from early Roman history, that of Gaius Mucius and Marcus Curtius.  Both were young men prepared to give up their own lives in order that Rome should survive.  The doors enclose a fantastic inlaid interior ‘caisson’ with hidden drawers and the feel of a miniature stage where treasures could be displayed.

Commenting on the success of the sale Simon Chorley said, “Yet again it shows there is tremendous demand for items of quality and assessing their estimate price is becoming increasingly more challenging when pieces such as this rarely come on the market.  Similar cabinets have sold for considerably less than this in recent years”.
