Chipping Campden 1914-1918 - a new book by Paul R Hughes

Saturday 8th November 2008 - Sunday 9th November, Chipping Campden Town Hall, Glos.
The launch of a new book with over 500 photographs featuring the stories of 488 Chipping Campden men and women who were involved in World War 1.

The book will be launched by Campden District Branch of the Gloucestershire Family History Society at an Exhibition which will include stories of some of the soldiers in the book, the War Memorial and the Volunteers, with medals and artefacts.
Visitors can walk around a "Campden 1914-1918 Town Trail" which features WW1 landmarks and window displays.

Remembrance weekend in Chipping Campden will be a very special event marking the launch of this book. Teacher and Historian Paul Hughes, himself a Campdonian, has spent the last fifteen years researching their biographies and has an unparalleled collection of local photographs, documents and medals. "Campden 1914-1918" uses over 500 original photographs and hundreds of interviews with surviving relatives.

The result is not only an important reference book and a tribute to people who deserve to be remembered but also a picture of a community in a time of stress.

The Hughes family’s association with Chipping Campden can be traced back to 1828, when Richard Hughes married Sarah Beard in St. James’s Church, and a strong sense of belonging is evident in the present book. It was written, the author says, that future generations might read about the men and women of the town who served their country, often at great sacrifice, during the First World War and might see them as individuals in a context rather than just so many names on a memorial.
